Welcome to Friday! Unlike last week, this one seemed to fly by. I don’t know why that is, but the perception of time is so interesting, isn’t it?! I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a while because I have both days off (!!!) and Tanner and I are heading to a wedding. It’s going to be awesome!
Let’s jump right in to the weekly Five Friday Faves post, where I talk about 5 things I’m loving this week. As always, feel free to comment with something you’ve been loving, too!
Well, we’re in that season where Bravo is losing his puppy hair. I’m mourning the loss of my ultra soft tiny little baby, and I’m also mourning days gone by when I didn’t clog the vacuum every time I used it 😉 But when he was a pup, we bought this shedding blade, and using it every day has significantly reduced the amount of leftover hair alllllll over the house. It’s greatly appreciated, and I can’t recommend it enough!
Homemade Zucchini Bread
Our garden at work has been quite prolific lately, and I jumped at the chance to take home a zucchini. My original plan was to make zucchini hash browns, a recipe my mom gave me. But I waited and waited until the zucchini was at the point where I needed to use it, and realized I didn’t have half the ingredients like I thought I did. So, I made zucchini bread instead! Also my mom’s recipe! I’ve been excited to try out my mini loaf pans, and these were perfect. I’ve been loving this lately, but nothing compares to how my mom makes it 😉
Breakfast for Dinner
What is it about breakfast that’s so comforting? Tanner and I didn’t plan any meals this week because we weren’t sure if he would have baseball playoff games. Well, they lost early, unfortunately for him (I’m happy to have him back in the evenings!) So by Thursday, we were out of meal ideas, and didn’t feel like another round of burgers. So we decided on pancakes and oh my gosh were they good! Just your simple Bisquick mix, but man, did they satisfy. Best part, Tanner made them 🙂 There’s just something about simple. easy dinners that just sets the tone for a nice, relaxing night.
Better Call Saul
IT’S BACK!!!! Wow, do I love this show. I had to watch a quick recap of the series up until this point to remember everything, but I am so happy this show is back on TV. Bob Odenkirk is awesome, and I love how they tie in pieces of Breaking Bad along the way. This complex spin off series has my heart.
This week at work, I was able to do a home evaluation for one of our patients who suffered a stroke. At my facility, we occasionally do home evaluations for people who have concerns about returning home, and it’s questionable if it’s possible. I’ve been on 4 or 5 prior to this one, but every single time I feel such a sense of pride in my patients, coworkers, and career. Home evaluations are THE ESSENCE of what we do. At a rehab hospital, the goal is almost always to have the patient return home at their prior level of function. Getting able to actual visit the home and walk them through their daily activities is so awesome.
For home evals, we go as a team: OT and PT, plus the patient and a caregiver, if possible. As an occupational therapist, I look at everything. How far is it from their car/bus stop to the house? What type of surface? Is it even? Is it handicap accessible? Are they able to access stairs or entrances to the home? Inside the home, we look at the entryway, hallways, and every single living space. We make sure they can transfer on and off the couch, or the chair, or the kitchen chair. We go into bathrooms and see if they can safely use the toilet and shower. We make sure they can reach the sinks, cabinets, stoves, microwaves, phones, light switches, laundry, EVERYTHING. We assess their ability to navigate with impairments in strength, endurance, balance, sensation, cognition, vision. It is SO COOL.
The best part is the collaboration. Working closely with PT and the patient and the caregiver is amazing. So many perspectives come together to problem solve how to make something safer or more efficient. I love it. I love my job.
I hope you all have an incredible weekend!
